The jute industry in the state of West Bengal and the rest of India is currently in distress. With the recent murder which has taken place at the Northbrook jute mill, the industry leaders are facing a very hard time.. The CEO was murdered by a bunch of miscreants in broad daylight. It has sent shockwaves through the industry and vehemently protested from many sectors. A variety of factors have played a key role in creating such a tough situation for the industry.
Currently, more than 12 lakh citizens in the state of West Bengal are solely dependant on the jute industry. The murder at the Northbrook jute mill is a major setback for the industry and the mill has closed down after that. Currently, all the workers from the jute mill are out of work with their families in a very distressed condition.
As per the owner of the Northbrook jute mill, the murder has been caused by anti socials but the real story signals something different. The murder was mainly caused due to a wage related dispute between the management and the workers. Ghanshyam Sarda one of the most high profile business leaders and jute barons from West Bengal has also protested the incident.
The workers have been demanding a revised wage structure but it was not taken care off. It is quite impossible to run a jute mill without pacified workers and the same thing happened at Northbrook. The union related problems have also caused a major setback in the development of the jute sector in West Bengal.
A variable amount of political interference has been witnessed in the sector from time to time. It is very hard to reach a decision regarding the development of a jute mill without the intervention from local political leaders. A meeting with the chief minister of West Bengal has been sought to bring in some major changes in the jute sector. The members of the Ghanshyam Sarda Kolkata group are quite aware about this problem and want a variety of quick measures in this regard.
