West Bengal has become one of the leading jute producing centres in India all thanks to the geographical condition that has enabled it. The state is said to have the highest number of mills in India. At a glance it might seem that jute is a growing industry in the state but actually the fact is not the same. For almost five to ten years or so the scenario has not undergone a transformation.
The trend of consumption has also reduced greatly. Despite the fact that the government has already announced to use jute bags while packing paddy jute industry has not witnessed any sort of improvement.
The problems that have been faced by the industry in the recent times are raw materials shortage, lack of skilled labour and old machines. Apart from these a major problem that remains still that there are many global players for jute who is posing a tough competition ahead for India.
The most vital of the obstacle that is not allowing the Indian jute industry to flourish is the over use of plastic bags. It is cheaper than jute and is readily. Although the endevours have been taken, still jute bags at that low cost cannot be made. The recurrent loss is adding to the woes. Thus many investors are opting out of the jute industry. Many mills have shut in the recent years and thus many workers have taken their lives.
Innovative jute products and also nationalization of jute mills can possibly ease out the present situation. Business leaders like Ghanshyam Sarda have come up to enhance the scenario. He is the owner of the Sarda group that alone has multiple jute mills across the state.

It is earnestly hoped that the Indian jute industry will see a new dawn in the near future if these initiatives are taken forward in the right way.
